Fatmata Binta has been appointed FAO Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Africa. Originally from Sierra Leone and based in Ghana, she is the first African to win the Basque Culinary World Prize for her work in cuisine and the development of African food systems.
With her nomadic restaurant “Dine on a Mat” and the Fulani Kitchen Foundation, Binta showcases forgotten African foods, such as fonio, and supports women farmers. Since 2023, the chef has been working with the FAO to train women fonio producers and improve their production techniques.
FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu explains that Fatmata Binta will continue to use her voice to promote healthy diets, enhance local crops, and help reduce food waste.
In her role, the chef aims to champion Africa’s forgotten foods, support women in agriculture, and give greater visibility to rural communities. “With FAO, I want to contribute to food security and a sustainable future for all,” she says.
