The EU supports the new agricultural school in the Comoros

Inauguration of the National School for Agricultural Training and Rural Development (ENFAD) in Wanani

The European Union invested 193.348 million Comorian francs (US$454,000) through the Msomo na Hazi program to build the National School for Agricultural Training and Rural Development (ENFAD) in Wanani, on the Djando plateau in Mwali.

The first public institution dedicated to technical and vocational agricultural training in the Comoros, ENFAD trains young people in agricultural professions and rural development to strengthen national skills.

The school has three equipped classrooms, an administrative office, restrooms, a cold storage room, a research laboratory, and a multipurpose room. Four renovated classrooms and two administrative offices increase the school’s capacity to 210 students.

Three educational pathways are available to students: the BEPA (Vocational Studies Certificate in Agriculture), the agricultural baccalaureate, and the BTS (Advanced Vocational Diploma) in agricultural analysis or entrepreneurship. For the first year, 74 apprentices began classes on November 24th. Seventeen instructors and six administrative staff members are supervising the students. The school anticipates a total of 90 apprentices for this first cohort.

The construction work cost 145.462 million Comorian francs, the agricultural equipment 38.090 million, and the office furniture just over 9 million. The European Union also funded the development of technical standards, modular training, and the establishment of a board of directors, for an additional 48.787 million.

According to the Minister of National Education, Bacar Mvoulana, “We are building more than just walls: we are investing in the skills of our future workers.” For her part, the Governor of Mwali, Chamina Ben Mohamed, encouraged optimal management of the school so that future generations can fully benefit from it.

The National School of Agriculture (ENFAD) is part of the Emerging Comoros Plan, which places agriculture among the national priorities. The government will provide an annual subsidy of 80 million Comorian francs to ensure its sustainability.
