The school calendar is being extended to improve student performance

Strengthening the Quality of Education

The Malagasy education system is about to undergo a significant change with the extension of the school calendar.

This measure, announced by the education authorities, aims to strengthen the quality of education and allow students to benefit from more learning time throughout the year.

According to sector officials, this reorganization addresses several challenges facing education in Madagascar. Frequent interruptions of classes due to weather conditions, logistical constraints, or organizational difficulties have often reduced the actual number of teaching days.

By extending the school calendar, the Ministry intends to guarantee sufficient teaching hours to cover all the curricula and improve student learning outcomes.

This reform applies to both public and private schools. It should allow teachers to better distribute teaching materials and dedicate more time to review and support for struggling students.

Education officials believe this measure will help reduce learning gaps and better prepare students for the various national exams.

However, extending the school year also raises concerns among some parents and stakeholders in the education sector.

Many emphasize the need to support this reform with additional resources, particularly in terms of infrastructure, teaching materials, and teacher training. Others stress the importance of ensuring adequate rest periods for students to maintain a balance between learning and well-being.

Despite these challenges, the authorities are confident in the positive impact of this initiative. In a context where improving the quality of education is among the national priorities, extending the school year appears to be an important lever for strengthening students’ skills and contributing to the development of human capital in Madagascar.
