ITB Berlin: Madagascar in the spotlight for sustainable tourism

The Big Island Attracts Attention

Several regional and international organizations welcomed Madagascar to the ITB Berlin trade fair, held from March 3 to 5, 2025, in Berlin.

The event allowed the country to strengthen its partnerships and showcase its sustainable tourism. The Malagasy delegation, led by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, Dr. Arilala Léa Razanamaria, met with representatives of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to discuss the Transboundary Conservation Areas (TFCA) Development Programme. These protected areas offer both environmental value and potential for ecotourism. The northern and western regions, rich in natural landscapes and marine resources, were identified as priorities for tourism offerings focused on nature and local experiences.

Meetings with UN Tourism also provided an opportunity to work on increasing Madagascar’s international visibility. “The goal is to better communicate the country’s strengths, its unique landscapes, its cultural heritage, and its commitment to responsible tourism,” according to the Ministry. Faced with global competition, this collaboration aims to strengthen Madagascar’s image as an attractive and sustainable destination.

On the sidelines of the trade show, discussions with the regional organization Vanilla Islands helped strengthen tourism cooperation in the Indian Ocean. These discussions prepared this network of islands for its participation in the International Tourism Fair Madagascar, scheduled for June 2025. “This initiative promotes multi-destination tours and improves connectivity between the islands,” the source added.
