Increased support for nurses in overseas territories

The National Council of the Order of Nurses (CNOI) aims to make access to healthcare a reality for all

Supporting nurses in their daily work was the focus of Alain Desbouchages, President of the National Council of the Order of Nurses (CNOI), during his visit to Réunion and Mayotte.

Alongside Flavie Mariamon, President of the Regional Council of the Order of Nurses for Réunion and Mayotte (974-976), he introduced the new President of the Réunion-Mayotte Interdepartmental Council, Paul Laurent Zettor, a self-employed nurse, and his colleague Moizari Ahmada, Deputy Secretary General in Mayotte.

Their primary mission will be to support healthcare professionals in their practice, ensure adherence to professional ethics, and participate in the territorial organization of healthcare. In areas where access to healthcare remains challenging, this new structure will allow for better coordination and governance adapted to local realities.

“Equal access to healthcare must not remain just an idea, but become a reality for everyone, including in the overseas territories,” declared Alain Desbouchages. He emphasized the essential role of healthcare professionals in managing chronic illnesses, handling emergencies, and supporting populations living in isolated areas.

The President of the National Council of Nurses (CNOI) also addressed the Nursing Law, a major reform that fully recognizes the skills and autonomy of nurses. The implementing regulations, expected by June 2026, must, according to him, remain faithful to the spirit of the law and address the needs on the ground, particularly in areas where medical resources are limited.

Regarding the attractiveness of the profession, Desbouchages stressed the need to retain professionals and improve their working conditions. “Without nurses, there is no access to healthcare,” he reiterated, emphasizing the importance of strengthening university training and reviewing nurse-to-patient ratios.

Furthermore, the President reaffirmed the “zero tolerance” policy toward gender-based and sexual violence within the profession. This campaign aims to break the silence, ensure the safe reporting of abuse, and support victims.
