Jirama’s contract with HFF for generators in Mahajanga extended until December 2026

Ensuring the stability of the electricity grid in this region

The national water and electricity company Jirama has decided to extend its contract with HFF until December 2026 for the rental of generators to bolster the electricity supply to the city of Mahajanga.

This decision is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the stability of the electricity grid in this strategic region on the west coast of Madagascar.

For several years, Mahajanga has faced increasing energy demand, driven in particular by population growth, the development of economic activities, and the booming tourism sector. To meet these needs and mitigate the risk of power outages, Jirama relies on temporary solutions such as the rental of generators.

The extension of the partnership with HFF aims to guarantee continuity of service while awaiting the implementation of more sustainable energy solutions. The generators currently in operation contribute significantly to electricity production in the city and help maintain grid capacity during periods of high demand.

However, this decision also reignites the debate on the cost of leasing thermal power plants and the need to accelerate investment in sustainable energy infrastructure. Many observers believe that the continued use of generators is an effective emergency solution, but that it cannot replace the development of new production capacity, particularly from renewable energy sources.

For the residents and businesses of Mahajanga, this extension is primarily seen as a safeguard against the recurring power outages that can disrupt daily activities and economic growth. Jirama, for its part, affirms that it is continuing its energy sector modernization projects to sustainably improve the quality and reliability of electricity supply in Madagascar.
