A new era for Malagasy universities

Towards Complete Renovation in Antananarivo and Toamasina

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESupReS) and the VISEO Foundation launched a program on November 27th aimed at rehabilitating priority university campuses.

The ceremony took place at the Higher Polytechnic School of Antananarivo (ESPA Vontovorona). During his speech, the Minister of MESupReS, Professor RAVONIMANANTSOA Ndaohialy Manda-Vy, and the Director General of the VISEO Foundation, Moustafa HIRIDJEE, signed a cooperation agreement. The 24-month partnership includes the renovation and modernization of infrastructure on several key campuses, notably in Antananarivo (Vontovorona and Ankatso) and Toamasina (Barikadimy).

The project includes the rehabilitation of sanitary facilities, bringing electrical installations in dilapidated buildings up to code, roof repairs, and improvements to water and sanitation networks. Classrooms, libraries, and sports facilities will also be modernized to provide a safe and suitable learning environment for students.

The Vontovorona campus accommodates more than 3,900 students, while its residences, built in 1985, house only 2,490. The infrastructure is showing its age, and piecemeal repairs have not been sufficient to resolve housing problems or improve sanitation and electrical systems.

The VISEO Foundation, known for its work in rehabilitating secondary schools and high schools, will provide concrete financial support to the universities. Several partners will join the Ministry to expand the program and modernize other institutions across the country.

Following the signing, a site visit to the targeted areas in Vontovorona allowed for an assessment of the scope of the work to be undertaken. “We can no longer allow our future engineers, doctors, teachers, and researchers to live and study in conditions undignified for a country that aspires to development,” declared Moustafa HIRIDJEE.
