A New Step for Madagascar in International Relations
Madagascar Officially Joins BRICS. The President of the Refoundation of the Republic, Michael Randrianirina, confirmed the country’s participation in the summit to be held in India this June and July, following an official visit to South Africa.
“This was an official mission, during which we met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa,” explained Michael Randrianirina last Saturday, after returning with his delegation. Several topics were discussed, including the lifting of sanctions imposed on Madagascar within the African Union and the recognition of the country as a strategic partner. “We also discussed solutions for moving towards the Fifth Republic and the appointment of our new ambassadors,” he added.
During this visit, the Head of State met with local and foreign business leaders. Discussions focused on reviving the SIRAMA company, road construction, and opening the road to Maintirano. Several companies expressed their readiness to invest in the telecommunications sector in the near future. To facilitate these projects and ensure fair competition, he emphasized the need to adapt certain laws to reduce internet costs and prevent abuses.
Michael Randrianirina also refuted rumors circulating on social media suggesting his visit was private. “It was an official mission accompanied by ministers. What’s circulating on Facebook is false and doesn’t benefit the country,” he clarified.
As a reminder, Madagascar and South Africa have been cooperating since 1994. This trip strengthens these relations and opens new opportunities for national diplomacy and the economy. Participation in the BRICS summit will allow the country to enhance its international presence while preparing reforms to support development and competitiveness.
