Khaled El-Enany, former Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, becomes Director-General of UNESCO for a four-year term. The appointment was decided at the 222nd session of the Executive Board, with 55 votes out of 58, a clear victory over his Congolese opponent. This election makes the Egyptian the second African to lead the organization since Amadou-Mahtar M’Bow.

Recognized as an archaeologist and academic, the new leader has dedicated his career to protecting cultural heritage and promoting Egyptian tourism. His time at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities led to the restoration of numerous historic sites and the promotion of the national heritage on the international stage.

The upcoming mandate promises to be ambitious: modernizing the institution, strengthening cultural diplomacy, and diversifying funding are among the priorities. The first 100 days will be devoted to developing a clear roadmap to be shared with Member States.

The appointment is scheduled for November 14, 2025, following the official designation planned in Samarkand.
