Dr. Mamadou Tangara appointed head of the AU Mission in the Sahel

Dr. Mamadou Tangara has been appointed Special Representative of the African Union Commission for the Sahel region and Head of the African Union Mission in Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL).

Former Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2025, this expert in regional diplomacy succeeds Maman Sambo Sidikou. A doctor in international communications and former Ambassador to the United Nations, the official has extensive experience in managing the complex political and security challenges of the Sahel.

Responsible for relaunching inclusive political dialogue, coordinating the fight against terrorism and strengthening regional cooperation, this Diplomat will have to navigate a context marked by military governments and tensions between Sahelian states.
