A Continental Evaluation Mission
More than 40 member countries participate in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), a continental framework that helps states improve their public policies, particularly in the education sector.
It is in this context that the Seychelles is currently hosting an evaluation mission of its education system. The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr. Patrick Herminie, received Professor Olive Mugenda, Chair of the APRM Panel of Eminent Persons, at State House for a courtesy visit. The delegation is in the country to analyze the functioning of the national education system.
This mission follows a request from the Seychellois government, submitted by the Minister of Education and Human Resource Development, David Pierre, to the APRM Continental Secretariat based in South Africa. The objective is to assess the performance of the education system, identify weaknesses, and propose avenues for improvement.
During the meeting, the Head of State welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector. He also emphasized the importance of data-driven assessments to guide public policy decisions.
The assessment, launched this week, is based on extensive discussions with stakeholders in the sector. The delegation is meeting with government officials, teachers, education professionals, and community representatives. These discussions are helping to gain a better understanding of the progress made and the challenges encountered.
Initial observations show that Seychelles has a high rate of access to education, with approximately 98% school enrollment. This figure places the country among the best in Africa in this area. However, difficulties are emerging regarding the transitions between secondary school, A-Level studies, and university.
APRM experts, with the support of local and international specialists, will analyze all the information gathered. These experts will compare the results with best practices observed in other member countries.
