A New Step Towards Digital Inclusion in Africa
Airtel Africa has announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX to launch Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite connectivity in its 14 African countries, covering 174 million customers. This service will allow users of compatible smartphones to stay connected even in areas without terrestrial network coverage.
The service is scheduled to launch in 2026. Initially, customers will be able to use text messaging and certain data applications. Eventually, the new Starlink satellites will offer broadband speeds up to 20 times faster than current solutions. The goal is to provide reliable internet access even in remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure is difficult to install.
“This technology complements our terrestrial network and allows us to reach previously inaccessible areas. We are pleased to offer our customers a service of this quality and reach,” explained Sunil Taldar, General Manager of Airtel Africa.
For SpaceX, this partnership represents a first on the African continent. Stephanie Bednarek, Vice President of Sales, explained that African populations will finally be able to stay connected in remote areas. “Our high-speed technology will provide fast access to many essential services and improve the daily lives of millions of people,” she added.
Airtel Africa thus becomes the first African operator to offer an innovative satellite mobile service. The two companies are already considering other projects to expand internet access and strengthen digital inclusion across the continent.
