Statistical Systems: Senegal Becomes African Leader According to the World Bank

Senegal has just established itself as the African leader in statistical systems, according to the Statistical Performance Indicators published by the World Bank. With a score of 81.4 out of 100 for 2024, the country surpasses South Africa, Mauritius, and Egypt, confirming the remarkable progress of its statistical apparatus.

Recognition of Institutional Quality

This distinction rewards not only the production of figures, but also the robustness of the statistical infrastructure, the availability of data, its dissemination, and its use in public decision-making. The ranking covers 188 economies representing more than 99% of the world’s population, giving this result significant international significance.

For Senegal, this first-place ranking in Africa marks a continuous rise in power. The country still held fourth place in 2022 and 2023, behind the same direct competitors, before surpassing them in the latest update.

A lever for governance

Beyond the symbolic value, this performance reflects a central issue: the quality of public policies depends heavily on the reliability of data. A high-performing statistical system allows for better targeting of investments, guidance of reforms, and a better understanding of the impact of development programs.

In a context where African states are seeking to strengthen their information sovereignty, the Senegalese case demonstrates that a sustained investment in statistics can produce concrete results. The World Bank also highlights the progress made by the national statistical system, supported by decades of commitment and institutional innovation.

The role of the ANSD

This progress is also the result of the work of the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), which is at the heart of the reform of the national statistical system. The press release, relayed by Senegalese media, notes that this distinction coincides with the 20th anniversary of the ANSD (National Agency for Statistics and Demography) and the reform of the National Statistical System (NSS), thus reinforcing the significance of this recognition.

The ANSD plays a crucial role in the collection, processing, and dissemination of economic and social data. Its institutional strengthening has enabled the country to improve its capacity to produce more reliable and useful statistics for planning.

A signal for Africa

Senegal’s leadership in statistics sends a strong message to the rest of the continent. In a region where data quality often remains uneven, Senegal’s performance can serve as a benchmark for reforms undertaken in other countries.

The ranking also underscores that statistics is not a secondary technical sector, but a pillar of modern governance. Without robust data, it is difficult to measure progress, identify gaps, and develop effective public policies.

An asset for development

This top African ranking can also enhance Senegal’s image among investors, technical partners, and international financial institutions. More reliable data strengthens a country’s credibility and facilitates decision-making in areas as diverse as the economy, health, education, and infrastructure.

As African states seek to accelerate their economic transformation, quality becomes a statistical advantage. Senegal demonstrates that a methodical investment in data institutions can become a genuine driver of national competitiveness.
