Public health: A Senegalese woman takes the reins of ESPEN in Africa

Dr. Ndèye Mbacké Kane has been appointed Chair of the Steering Committee of ESPEN, the WHO’s special program for Africa that aims to eliminate neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The announcement was made in Brazzaville during the committee’s 10th meeting.

A physician and public health specialist, Dr. Kane has worked extensively in the fight against NTDs in Senegal. She notably coordinated the National Program for the Control of these diseases, which include lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, trachoma, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. These diseases primarily affect poor populations and those with limited access to clean water and healthcare.

ESPEN, established by WHO Africa, helps countries plan, implement, and monitor actions to eliminate these diseases. The program works closely with governments, international partners, and local organizations.
