India Supports the Modernization of Public Transport in Mauritius
90 additional electric buses have been added to Mauritius’ public transport network, marking a significant step in the sector’s modernization.
These vehicles join a total fleet of 100 buses donated by India, with an initial batch of 10 delivered in August 2025. The official handover ceremony took place on April 10 at the Rose Belle Market Fair. At the event, the Indian Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, symbolically presented the keys to the Mauritian Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam. Several members of the Mauritian government, including the Minister of Transport, Osman Mahomed, were also present.
This initiative aims to make public transport cleaner and more modern. It also contributes to reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality. For the authorities, this represents a significant step towards more environmentally friendly mobility.
The Minister of Transport explained that this new fleet arrives at a crucial time, as the NTC’s old buses had become too outdated. “The objective is also to reduce dependence on fuel, especially in a context of rising international prices,” he stated.
To facilitate their use, the buses will be recharged outside of peak hours, starting at 9 p.m., to avoid overloading the electrical grid. A fleet management system will also be implemented. “This system will allow us to track routes, distances traveled, and bus performance in real time,” the Minister added.
Faced with tensions in the global energy market, the authorities are also encouraging the public to make greater use of public transportation and to carpool. According to him, with this new fleet, Mauritius confirms its commitment to modernizing its mobility system and embarking on a sustainable transition.
