Public transport: 50% discount on Yellow Bus season tickets

The Region invests 7 to 8 million euros to support households

A financial effort of 7 to 8 million euros has been committed by the Réunion Region to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices on residents.

This initiative was presented on Monday, May 4th, by the Regional President, Huguette Bello, in support of the Car Jaune public transport network.

Among the main measures, Car Jaune season tickets now benefit from a 50% discount, effective May 1st. This reduction aims to ease the transportation costs of regular users and support their purchasing power.

The Region has also increased service with eight additional departures each day. This improvement makes travel easier and public transport more accessible and convenient for passengers.

These decisions complement the actions already implemented since 2022. The regional authority is continuing to modernize the Car Jaune network, gradually renewing its fleet and maintaining free fares for certain priority groups. The region also encourages alternative modes of transportation, such as carpooling, through dedicated apps.

Faced with the situation, Huguette Bello criticized the profits of oil companies. “Oil companies made an additional 51% profit during this crisis, representing 4 billion euros, and they only agreed to give a 5-cent discount to the people of Réunion. It’s a disgrace,” she declared.

This official also specified that the Regional Council has decided to redistribute all of the surplus revenue from the overseas tax to directly support the population. With these measures, the Réunion Regional Council aims to both reduce household expenses and encourage the use of public transportation on the island.
