United States – Europe: Cooperation in sight with the Air Madagascar “group”

Forging Strategic Partnerships

The United States and Europe are now vying for the opportunity to forge new partnerships with the Air Madagascar group, amidst the strategic restructuring of the Malagasy national airline.

American and European delegations recently assessed the group’s potential, marking a significant turning point for the future direction of Madagascar Airlines.

This new phase is part of the “Phoenix 2030” plan, an ambitious recovery program co-financed by the government, private partners, and the World Bank for a total of $100 million. The objective is clear: to achieve financial profitability by 2025 and resume international flights by 2026.

Madagascar Airlines has already demonstrated its ability to forge strategic partnerships. In October 2024, the airline signed a commercial cooperation agreement with Air France, including an interline agreement and coordinated flight schedules in Antananarivo. More recently, in September 2025, a codeshare agreement was launched with Corsair to Réunion Island, expanding the commercial partnership. The airline also established a presence in 17 new countries through APG, including the United States, strengthening its international visibility.

The interest from American and European powers confirms Madagascar’s strategic position as an air hub in the Indian Ocean. Its removal from the European Union’s blacklist in 2022 also opened the door to new opportunities for cooperation.
