Successful Test for the Capital’s Future Train
The Antananarivo urban train will be officially launched on December 15, following a successful technical test on December 11 on the Soarano–Ambohimananambola section. The Ministry of Transport and Meteorology, in partnership with Madarail, oversaw the test, which proceeded without incident, confirming that everything is ready for passenger service.
This test allowed for the verification of equipment and ensured that trained staff have a thorough understanding of maneuvers and safety procedures. According to an official within the department, “we are ready to welcome passengers in optimal conditions.”
The urban train will operate on 16 kilometers of track and serve ten stations, eight of which are already operational. Composed of a diesel locomotive and two passenger cars, it will be able to carry up to 300 passengers per trip. Staff are mobilized, and new recruits may be added as needed. The fare structure, still under review, will remain affordable for everyone.
“A public awareness campaign is also underway to prepare residents for the arrival of this service. The goal is to ensure the smooth integration of the train into the city’s daily life and to guarantee everyone’s safety,” stated Jhanard Privat Andriamiarantsoa, Director General of Land Transport.
This project aligns with the authorities’ commitment to modernizing transportation in Antananarivo. “The initiative offers a fast, comfortable, and reliable alternative for daily commutes and aims to reduce urban congestion,” he added.
