Patrick Herminie Supports a Project
A total of 320 million Seychellois rupees (US$23 million) is funding the construction of the new wastewater treatment plant in La Digue, Seychelles
President Patrick Herminie made his first official visit to La Digue on May 21. During his visit, he toured the new plant operated by the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC).
Welcomed by Ravin Sunassee, PUC’s Director of Operations, the President received a presentation on the plant’s operation and the various stages of wastewater treatment.
Located in the L’Union estate, south of La Digue, the plant is gradually becoming operational. To date, 60 households have already connected to the network. The facility can treat up to 1,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. Work continues on the network, with new connections expected in the coming months.
The project aims to cover nearly 95% of the domestic wastewater produced on the island. The European Investment Bank, the French Development Agency, and PUC are contributing to the financing.
Before this project, the population primarily used septic tanks and soaking pits for wastewater disposal. This situation increased the risks to groundwater and the ecosystem, especially with the growth of tourism.
