Sunil Bharti Mittal Receives Global Award for His Outstanding Career
Bharti Airtel, one of the world’s largest mobile operators, with a presence in India and Africa, owes its success to the vision of its Founder and Chairman, Sunil Bharti Mittal.
With more than half a billion customers, the company has become a major player in global telecommunications. This achievement was recently recognized with the GSMA Lifetime Achievement Award, a prize that celebrates individuals who have made a lasting impact on the history of the mobile industry.
The ceremony took place in Barcelona during the Mobile World Congress, in the presence of King Felipe VI, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the President of Catalonia Salvador Illa, and numerous industry leaders.
Under his leadership, the company established itself as a pioneer in the expansion of mobile services, particularly in emerging markets. Sunil Bharti Mittal also served as Chairman of the GSMA from 2017 to 2018, during which time he encouraged investment, supported innovation, and championed greater digital inclusion in developing countries.
This is not his first recognition: the GSMA previously awarded him two prizes, in 2008 and 2016, for his contributions to the growth and development of the global mobile sector. Thanks to his leadership, Airtel has enabled millions of people to access telephony and the internet, profoundly transforming daily life in many regions.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award. This honor recognizes not only my career, but also India’s journey in telecommunications and Bharti’s team spirit,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal upon receiving the award. He believes that telecommunications is a force that expands opportunities and unlocks human potential.
For him, this prize also rewards all the teams that have contributed to connecting populations around the world, and highlights the role of telecommunications as an engine of progress and inclusion.
