Alaotra: 18,500 people soon to be connected to electricity

DECIM Fund : First Signature to Electrify 13 fokontany

The Jiro Kanto company has signed the first DECIM Fund grant contract, launched by the Malagasy government with support from the World Bank.

This grant, worth USD 2,226,600, will enable Jiro Kanto to build a 700-kilowatt mini-hydroelectric grid in Maheriara, in the Lake Alaotra region. This network will supply 13 fokontany located in the districts of Amparafaravola and Ambatondrazaka. A total of 3,711 households and businesses will be connected to electricity, representing approximately 18,500 people. Thanks to this project, villages that previously lacked access to electricity will finally benefit.

Jiro Kanto is a company committed to the development of renewable energy in Madagascar. It is part of the iED group, which works in several countries to improve access to electricity in isolated areas. The DECIM Fund (Development of Electrification and Inclusive Connectivity in Madagascar) aims to support projects like this one by providing financing to build electricity networks in regions not yet connected to the national grid.

The project is managed by Bamboo Capital Partners and implemented by the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons and the Ministry of Digital Development, Posts and Telecommunications (MNDPT). According to the authorities, “this first signature marks an important milestone.” The DECIM Fund is now operational and ready to support other projects throughout Madagascar. “The objective is to reduce inequalities in access to electricity and encourage local economic development through clean and sustainable energy,” added Olivier Jean Baptiste, Minister of Energy.
