Agreement to Create a Common Economic Zone to Be Signed Soon
Cooperation between Madagascar and Russia could soon reach a new stage with the establishment of a common economic zone.
This prospect was mentioned by the Malagasy Prime Minister, Mamitiana Rajaonarison, at the International Security Forum held in Moscow, thus signaling a desire to strengthen bilateral relations beyond the military sphere.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s office, an agreement to create this common economic zone is expected to be signed soon. During a discussion with Russian journalists on the sidelines of the event, the head of government emphasized Madagascar’s ambition to improve its business climate in order to attract more foreign investors.
The creation of a common economic zone aims to facilitate trade between the two countries by promoting the movement of goods, capital, and, in some cases, people. This type of partnership generally strengthens trade flows, stimulates investment, and encourages the transfer of technology and skills. Russia already has experience in this area, notably through the establishment of similar agreements with certain countries in its region.
For economic experts, such an initiative could offer new opportunities for Madagascar, particularly in terms of project financing, industrial development, and the modernization of certain strategic sectors. However, they emphasize that the success of such a partnership will depend on the existence of a robust legal framework guaranteeing a balance of interests between the two parties. The objective is to prevent any potential economic imbalance from harming national interests.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s office indicates that discussions are also underway with Russian authorities regarding strengthening fuel storage capacity in Madagascar. This cooperation is part of the search for solutions to disruptions in global energy supply, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions and conflicts currently affecting several regions of the world.
These various projects demonstrate the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their economic relations and exploring new avenues for strategic cooperation.
