Towards a safe internet for children in Mauritius

A New System to Regulate Internet Use

On average, 17 cases of cybercrime involving minors are reported every day, not counting those that go unreported. To better protect children online, the Mauritian government launched a special SIM card on December 10th in Ébène.

This project aims to make mobile phone use safer and encourage responsible use of digital tools.

During his speech, the Minister of Information Technology, Avinash Ramtohul, warned of the dangers present on the internet, such as content inciting self-harm, drugs, or any other information inappropriate for children. He also reminded the public that media outlets, social networks, and digital platforms must comply with existing laws, including the Data Protection Act and the ICTA Act, to protect the privacy of young people while respecting freedom of expression.

The secure SIM card offers several practical tools: filtering of dangerous content, parental controls, and alerts for suspicious behavior. This tool will allow families to better manage internet use and reduce the risks associated with cybercrime.

The ceremony brought together several prominent figures, including the Minister for Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Arianne Navarre-Marie, as well as representatives from regulatory bodies, telecommunications operators, and NGOs.
