Telecoms: Airtel Africa accelerates innovation with Starlink

A Solution for Underserved Areas

Airtel Africa has announced the successful completion of the first satellite-to-mobile connectivity tests in Kenya, conducted in partnership with SpaceX through its Starlink Mobile service.

This initiative represents a significant step forward in making the internet accessible in remote areas, which are generally without signal.

The trials were carried out in regions with no mobile coverage. Using this technology, 4G-enabled smartphones were able to connect directly to Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit. The connection was seamless, allowing users to stay connected even in areas that are usually unserved.

During this testing phase, several services were successfully used. Users were able to send messages on WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, view maps, and conduct transactions via the Airtel app. These results demonstrate that even with low data usage, essential services can function effectively.

Airtel Africa’s Managing Director, Sunil Taldar, welcomed these advancements. He emphasized that this project demonstrates the company’s commitment to strengthening connectivity access for all, particularly in the most remote areas.

Following these successful trials, Airtel Africa plans to gradually roll out this service across its 14 countries of operation in sub-Saharan Africa, subject to obtaining the necessary permits. The company also intends to develop more advanced services, including voice calls and faster internet access through the upcoming Starlink Mobile V2 technology.
