A Modern Building for the Women, Parents, and Children’s Center
Funding of €140 million, provided by the French government, the Regional Health Agency, the Réunion Region, and the University Hospital (CHU), will launch the construction of a new Women, Parents, and Children’s Center (BFPE) at the North University Hospital of Réunion. The building permit application will be submitted in the coming days, officially launching the project.
The building will cover more than 26,000 m² spread over nine floors. This structure will centralize all the activities of the Women, Parents, and Children’s Center and replace the island’s oldest maternity ward, which is considered too small and outdated. The University Hospital aims to offer patients a modern, patient-centered, and high-quality experience.
Currently spread across several older buildings, the center’s activities suffer from a complex organizational structure. Patients move between different departments, and healthcare teams are under considerable workload. The BFPE will bring all functions together in one location. The rooms, measuring 18 square meters, will include living spaces for families, allowing parents to stay with their hospitalized children.
This facility will offer a variety of specialized services. It will house the Indian Ocean Congenital Heart Disease Medical-Surgical Unit (M3C-OI), the Reference Center for Language and Learning Disorders (CRTLA), the ETCAF Resource Center, as well as a future center of expertise for pediatric diabetes and a milk bank. A physiological birthing unit and a functional pregnancy testing unit will complete the services offered for personalized care.
Existing facilities, such as the pediatric outpatient surgery unit, the pediatric renal replacement therapy center, and the pediatric emergency department, will undergo a complete modernization. Construction will begin in 2026, without disrupting access to care, and the building will be located next to the critical care building in the current university hospital parking lot. “The opening of the BFPE is planned for the end of 2029*” announced Huguette Bello, President of the Region.
