Bamako to Host the 3rd Digital Week

From January 29 to 31, 2026, Bamako is preparing to become one of West Africa’s epicenters of digital transformation with the 3rd Digital Week, dedicated to e-government in the age of artificial intelligence.

Context and Challenges

Digital Week is an initiative of the Malian Ministry of Communication, Digital Economy, and Administrative Modernization, spearheaded by Minister Alhamdou Ag Ilyène. The event is part of a broader strategy aimed at leveraging digital technology for sovereignty, administrative modernization, and resilience in the face of security and economic crises.

For this 3rd edition, initially scheduled for 2025 but rescheduled for January 29-31, 2026, due to a busy institutional agenda, Bamako aims to position itself as a regional hub for digital innovation. The choice of the Bamako International Conference Center (CICB) confirms the authorities’ desire to make it a key event for the entire country’s tech ecosystem.

2026 Theme: e-Government and AI

The chosen theme – “E-Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges for Culture” – illustrates the commitment to accelerating the digitalization of public services while taking into account Malian cultural specificities. The objective is to demonstrate how AI can optimize administrative management, access to public services, and artistic creation, without losing sight of ethical considerations and data sovereignty.

By placing e-government at the heart of the discussions, the authorities aim to strengthen transparency, reduce bureaucratic red tape, and bring the administration closer to citizens, particularly through online platforms and portals. The issues of digital identity, ICT financing, and the inclusion of young creators are also on the agenda.

Program: Panels, Masterclasses, and Competitions

Over three days, Digital Week will offer a packed program combining strategic thinking, experience sharing, and showcasing local innovation. Highlights include:

  • An opening ministerial panel bringing together the ministers in charge of digital affairs from Mali and partner countries such as Burkina Faso and Niger.
  • Thematic panels on artificial intelligence, digital public services, artistic creation, ICT financing, and digital identity.

The event will also provide ample space for startups and project leaders through a national innovation competition, contests, B2B sessions, and exhibition booths. Masterclasses, training sessions, and a comprehensive program aimed at upskilling 10,000 young people are planned, confirming the emphasis on human capital.

Youth, digital sovereignty, and the fight against disinformation

Malian authorities note that many young talents have emerged thanks to previous editions and hope to make this 3rd Week a further springboard for digital entrepreneurship. Minister Alhamdou Ag Ilyène calls on young people, innovators, and the private sector to mobilize to build a digital Mali that is “sovereign, inclusive, and forward-looking.”

Two key structural issues will be particularly highlighted: digital sovereignty and the fight against disinformation, considered a “constant battle” in a sensitive security and political context. Public communication, the reliability of online content, and the protection of digital infrastructure are presented as priorities for the country’s stability and independence.

A pivotal event for the Malian ecosystem

Having become a true think tank for Mali’s tech ecosystem, Digital Week, according to its organizers, continues to maintain its high quality, reach, and impact. Each edition strengthens synergies between government, the private sector, civil society, academia, and regional partners.

In 2026, Bamako intends to capitalize on this momentum to solidify its position among West African digital hubs, at a time when Africa is heavily investing in digital technology to accelerate its economic transformation. For digital stakeholders, the 3rd Digital Week promises to be a key moment for forging partnerships, testing innovative solutions, and participating in shaping Mali’s future digital public services.
