Rivière-Noire: Rs 165 million for cleaning and waste collection

Strengthening Environmental Policy in the Rivière-Noire District

The Mauritian government intends to strengthen its environmental policy in the Rivière-Noire district. During a recent address to Parliament, the Minister of Local Government, Ashok Kumar Subron, announced that a budget of Rs 165 million will be allocated to cleanup and waste collection operations in this region of western Mauritius.

This funding is primarily aimed at improving household waste management, strengthening public cleaning services, and combating illegal dumping, which affects several localities in the district. Rivière-Noire, known for its beaches, tourist areas, and natural spaces, has been facing environmental challenges for several years related to population growth and urban development.

According to the authorities, these funds will be used to acquire new equipment, optimize waste collection, and intensify public awareness campaigns. The project also includes plans for improved coordination between the district council, local authorities, and waste management operators.

The Mauritian government aims to promote a cleaner island and encourage sustainable waste management. This initiative is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the circular economy and reduce the environmental impacts of pollution. Authorities are also counting on citizen participation to ensure the success of the various clean-up campaigns organized in villages and coastal areas.

This announcement comes at a time when environmental issues are playing an increasingly important role in public policy in Mauritius. Between protecting the coastline, combating erosion, and improving waste management, the government is trying to meet the expectations of residents while preserving the island’s appeal to tourists.
