Resumption of Base Toliara Project Welcomed

Chamber of Mines and GEM appreciate the government’s decision

The decision by the government to lift the suspension of the Base Toliara project is warmly welcomed by the Chamber of Mines of Madagascar (CMM) and the Groupement des Entreprises de Madagascar (GEM).

The Malagasy government’s choice to allow the resumption of the project demonstrates its firm commitment to making the private sector the driving force for the country’s economic growth and sustainable development, according to both entities. At the same time, the Chamber of Mines and GEM reiterated their full support for the Base Toliara project. According to the two associations, the project will have significant economic implications for the Atsimo Andrefana region and Madagascar as a whole.

Base Toliara can also pave the way for other private-sector investors. The project provides an opportunity to promote private investments, whether national or international. The Chamber of Mines of Madagascar and the Groupement des Entreprises de Madagascar place great importance on encouraging local and international private investments, especially in the mining sector.

The project, which has received financing of 700 million USD, aims to extract the strategic minerals essential for the energy and digital transition. In 2019, the suspension of Base Toliara was decided due to environmental and social concerns, particularly regarding the impact on local communities and the environment. The suspension was lifted by the Council of Ministers on November 27.
