Reunion Island Focuses on a More Solidarity-Based Economy
As part of the policy championed by the President of the Regional Council, Huguette Bello, the local complementary currency TiKatsou has been launched in Reunion Island. This project encourages a more local, solidarity-based, and sustainable economy.
The Reunion Island Regional Council, represented by Jean-Bernard Maratchia, has confirmed its support for social and solidarity economy actors. The project is led by the Nout Moné association. Its aim is to develop local exchanges and support local merchants, producers, and small businesses. The first transactions began in Saint-Paul, with a gradual rollout planned for the western part of the island.
TiKatsou is based on a partnership between the Reunion Island Regional Council, the Western Territory, and the City of Saint-Paul. This local currency helps support short supply chains, responsible consumption, and local solidarity initiatives.
According to Jean-Bernard Maratchia, using TiKatsou helps support local producers and small businesses. “Each purchase thus becomes a useful gesture for the local economy,” he declared.
“This initiative also has an environmental aspect. By promoting local shopping, it reduces certain transportation needs and encourages better consumption habits. With this launch, Reunion Island confirms its commitment to building a more humane economy, closer to its residents and focused on the future,” he added.
