Mauritius is opening up to new perspectives with Japan

Concrete Initiatives for a Safe Indian Ocean

Japan has contributed to improving maritime safety around Mauritius. Experts have assisted the country in installing a coastal surveillance radar to better prevent natural disasters and strengthen stability in the Indian Ocean.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also supports training in the blue economy to promote the sustainable development of marine resources.

These initiatives were highlighted on February 6 in Floréal, on the occasion of Japan’s National Day and Emperor Naruhito’s birthday. The event brought together the President of the Republic, Dharam Gokhool, Deputy Prime Minister Paul Bérenger, Foreign Minister Ritish Ramful, and other prominent figures.

The Japanese Ambassador to Mauritius, Masahiro Kan, emphasized the progress made in relations between the two countries and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening these ties. The opening of the Mauritian embassy in Tokyo has facilitated diplomatic cooperation and increased exchanges in trade, education, and culture.

Mauritius also participated in the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) and the Osaka-Kansai 2025 World Expo, opening new opportunities for businesses and students. The diplomat emphasized the importance of these partnerships in bringing people closer together and supporting sustainable development.

Beyond infrastructure and trade, Japan encourages educational and cultural projects, offering young Mauritians training opportunities and global perspectives. Both countries are eager to explore new areas of cooperation within the framework of Mauritius’ Vision 2050, which aims for sustainable growth and a peaceful future for all.
