India – Mauritius: Major Agreements Signed

A Strengthened Partnership for Maritime Security and Good Governance

On March 11, 2025, the Indian Prime Minister arrived in Mauritius for an official visit, marking the country’s independence day.

The main objective of this visit is to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Mauritius. Several key agreements were signed, covering areas crucial to both nations, including maritime security, oceanographic research, and the fight against financial crimes.

One of the key agreements is the Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius Police Force, focusing on the sharing of information on commercial shipping. This strategic partnership aims to improve Mauritius’ maritime security. Through real-time exchange of vessel data, it will be easier to prevent illegal activities and ensure the security of trade routes.

Strengthening relations also includes cooperation in oceanographic research. The Indian National Institute of Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and the Prime Minister’s Office of Mauritius have agreed to collaborate. The goal is to develop advanced ocean modeling and improve marine resource management. This partnership will provide Mauritian specialists with training and access to the latest technologies to better monitor and protect the island’s maritime areas.

The fight against financial crime is another major focus of this visit. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Indian Enforcement Directorate and the Mauritius Financial Crimes Commission will strengthen cooperation in financial intelligence.
