Agreements and exchanges: Comoros and Malabo align their ambitions

Malabo Welcomes Azali Assoumani

The energy, economy, trade, fisheries, agriculture, education, and tourism sectors are at the heart of discussions between the Comoros and Equatorial Guinea.

On Tuesday, March 24, in Malabo, the two countries signed a framework cooperation agreement covering most key development sectors. The document was signed by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mbaé Mohamed and Simeón Oyono Esono Angue, on the first day of the state visit of Comorian President Azali Assoumani, who was invited by his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Upon his arrival, President Assoumani was greeted by Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue and received military honors before the official reception at the presidential palace. Accompanied by his wife, Ambari Darouech, and a large delegation, he praised the bonds of friendship and cooperation and reiterated the importance of creating joint opportunities for sustainable development, particularly in the blue economy.

The joint communiqué underscores the two countries’ commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and intensifying political and diplomatic dialogue. The two governments wish to exchange experiences and share knowledge to support economic and social development.

The Ministries of Foreign Affairs will hold regular consultations to coordinate their positions in regional and international forums. The agreement also aims to promote bilateral trade and foster a favorable investment climate by involving both the public and private sectors.

Three specific agreements on energy, the economy, trade, and investment protection are currently being negotiated, with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs overseeing the process. Scholarship programs and academic exchanges will strengthen human capital in both countries.

Following this visit, Azali Assoumani will participate in the 11th summit of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), scheduled for March 27-29 in Malabo. Several forums will address the blue economy, youth entrepreneurship, and the integration of women into agri-food systems.
