New Financial Assistance to Boost Key Sectors
A grant of 220 million Seychellois rupees (US$17 million) has just been awarded by China to support priority development projects in Seychelles.
The announcement was made during a meeting between Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and Seychellois President Dr. Patrick Herminie at State House. This funding marks a new stage in relations between the two countries, as they approach the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. The discussions reflected a strong cooperation built over the years and now reinforced by a strategic partnership.
President Herminie welcomed China’s continued support for the country’s development. He also reiterated Seychelles’ commitment to the One China policy, while emphasizing respect for sovereignty and international principles.
Thanks to this cooperation, several sectors have seen significant progress. Housing, health, education, infrastructure, and maritime security are among the most affected areas. These projects are yielding tangible results and directly contributing to the well-being of the population.
For his part, Han Zheng highlighted the progress made by the Seychelles. He indicated that he had observed firsthand the impacts of projects supported by China. According to him, the two countries share a common vision of development, centered on the needs of the people.
Discussions also focused on the economy. The Seychelles could soon benefit from China’s zero-tariff policy for African countries. An early harvest agreement is expected to come into effect on May 1, 2026, thus facilitating trade.
Tourism and cultural exchanges were also prominent topics. Both sides discussed the possibility of increasing the number of Chinese visitors and strengthening ties between their people. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to continue this cooperation. The two countries wish to move forward together toward sustainable development, based on mutual respect and shared interests.
