The GEVM calls for structural reforms of the vanilla sector rather than the purchase of stocks

Building a More Resilient Model to Secure the Future of Malagasy Vanilla

In Madagascar, the debate surrounding the future of the vanilla sector continues to generate reactions among industry stakeholders.

The Madagascar Vanilla Exporters Group (GEVM) recently called on the authorities to prioritize sustainable structural reforms rather than a vanilla stock buyback program, a solution deemed insufficient given the deep-rooted difficulties facing the sector.

According to GEVM, stock buybacks might provide temporary relief to some operators, but would not resolve the imbalances that have been weakening the Malagasy vanilla market for several years. The organization believes that a fundamental transformation of the sector is necessary to improve competitiveness, guarantee more stable incomes for producers, and strengthen Madagascar’s position on the international market.

Among the priorities mentioned are improved value chain organization, greater transparency in marketing, and strengthened coordination between producers, processors, exporters, and public authorities. GEVM also emphasizes the importance of adapting the sector to the realities of the global market, characterized by significant price fluctuations and increased competition.

Vanilla represents a major economic resource for Madagascar, particularly in producing regions like SAVA. However, falling international prices and the accumulation of unsold stock have created significant pressure on industry stakeholders. Some producers are struggling to sell their harvest at prices considered profitable.

Faced with this situation, GEVM calls for a long-term strategy based on quality, traceability, and modernization of the sector. For the group, the objective should not only be to manage current stocks but to build a more resilient model capable of ensuring the future of Malagasy vanilla.
