Rwanda has just launched eKash, a national digital payment platform designed to unify and streamline all electronic payments in the country, a key step towards an increasingly cashless economy. This infrastructure is intended to promote financial inclusion, reduce transaction costs, and support the country’s digital transformation strategy.
What is eKash?
eKash is the public name for the Rwanda National Digital Payment System (RNDPS 2.0), a national platform that enables instant payments between banks, mobile money operators, SACCOs (Single Accounts for Change), and fintechs, without barriers between different networks. Designed as a “digital public good,” it aims to make payments faster and more secure for both individuals and businesses.
An Official Launch in Kigali
The eKash platform was launched at a high-level ceremony at the Kigali Convention Centre, attended by members of the government, financial institutions, fintechs, and development partners. This launch follows a phase of testing and gradual deployment, confirming the system’s technical maturity and the support of key players in the Rwandan financial sector.
The stakeholders behind the platform
The project is led by RSwitch, Rwanda’s national electronic payment gateway, in collaboration with the National Bank of Rwanda, the Ministry of ICT, the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA), and several partners including AfricanNenda, Access to Finance Rwanda, GIZ, the Gates Foundation, and the Mojaloop community. The technical architecture is based on the open-source Mojaloop technology, integrated into RNDPS 2.0 to ensure interoperability and scalability of the platform.
How does eKash work on a daily basis?
eKash enables person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-business (P2B) transactions, with payments typically finalized in less than 15 seconds, regardless of the financial institution or operator used. Merchants can accept payments via a single QR code or other digital channels, without needing multiple terminals or apps for each bank or wallet.
Benefits for citizens and businesses
For individuals, eKash simplifies sending money and paying for goods and services, eliminating the need to worry about the network or bank used by the recipient, especially regarding fees and processing times. For micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), the platform facilitates cash collection, improves cash management, and enhances the traceability of transactions, which can promote access to credit and other formal financial services.
A lever for financial inclusion
The eKash project aligns with Rwanda’s strategy to expand access to financial services, particularly for low-income populations, women, and marginalized groups often underrepresented in the traditional financial system. By lowering barriers to entry and promoting interoperability, eKash aims to integrate more informal actors into the digital economy and strengthen trust in digital payments.
A step towards Vision 2050
The launch of eKash and the deployment of RNDPS 2.0 align with Vision 2050 and the Smart Rwanda Master Plan, which leverages technological innovation to support growth, modernize public services, and reduce cash usage. With a national payment infrastructure designed and developed primarily by African talent, Rwanda is positioning itself as a continental model for digital public infrastructure and inclusive finance.
