Sustainable hunting: Trophy exhibition in Mauritius

An environmentally friendly tradition

On Thursday, April 24, 2025, the Mauritius Hunters’ Society held its annual Trophy Exhibition at St. Joseph’s College in Curepipe.

This event attracted members of the Society, institutional partners, and representatives of public authorities, including Arvin Boolell, Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy, and Fisheries.

The exhibition showcased the expertise of Mauritian hunters. The public was able to admire a selection of trophies that demonstrate the hunters’ commitment to ethical and environmentally friendly practices. The trophies on display illustrate efforts to preserve biodiversity and practice regulated hunting.

Hunting, each year, brings 550 tons of local meat to market, thus contributing to the circular economy. This activity also supports land and forest conservation and creates jobs in various sectors.

The evening concluded with the presentation of awards to the year’s best hunters, recognizing exemplary performance and adherence to safety regulations. Gérard Merle, President of the Mauritius Hunters’ Society, emphasized that “This exhibition is a celebration of our ethics and our commitment to responsible and sustainable hunting.”
