Launch of the M’Safara bus network

A New Lease of Life for Transportation in Mayotte

The new M’Safara intercity transport network will be operational starting Friday, May 22nd in the territory of Mayotte.

Highly anticipated for several years, this project aims to facilitate travel for residents and alleviate congestion on the island’s roads. The Department-Region officially launched the project this Monday. Authorities present this initiative as an important step towards modernizing transportation and improving mobility. The network addresses a well-known daily problem: traffic jams and traffic difficulties.

During his speech, Ali Omar, Head of Transportation, highlighted the difficulties of getting around the island. Congested roads slow down journeys, complicate economic activity, and tire residents on a daily basis. With this new network, the authorities want to offer a better-structured alternative to make travel simpler and smoother.

Starting May 22nd, four lines will be in service. In Grande-Terre, the M1 line will connect Mamoudzou to Dzoumogné, while the M3 will serve Mamoudzou as far as Chirongui. In Petite-Terre, the M20 and M21 lines will connect Quai Ballou and Pamandzi, passing through Labattoir and continuing to Dzaoudzi.

These lines structure the island’s main transportation routes and facilitate connections around the ferry, the central hub of the transport system. Buses of varying capacities will operate on a regular schedule to ensure smooth journeys.

A single ticket costs €2. This fare includes the bus journey and the ferry crossing, with two possible transfers. For regular users, several monthly passes are available: €50 for the general public, €25 for young people, €35 for students, and €35 for seniors. Children under 10 travel free when accompanied by an adult.

Tickets will be sold at several transport hubs, including Mamoudzou, Dzoumogné, Dzaoudzi, Coconi, and Chirongui. An online platform will allow users to view schedules, top up their cards, and access useful information.

Authorities also announced a gradual expansion of the network with the opening of new lines in the coming months. To support the launch, 10,000 free tickets will be distributed to encourage residents to try this new mobility service.
