Rice Plus: concrete actions for Alaotra Mangoro

New Opportunities for Farmers

Approximately 1,660 hectares have already benefited from reforestation and agroforestry projects in the Bembary, Amparafaravola, and Sahamaloto areas.

This initiative is part of the progress of the Rice Plus project, implemented in the Alaotra Mangoro region to support farmers, increase production, and improve rural household incomes.

From April 27 to 29, 2026, a joint mission comprising representatives from the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD), the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance visited the area to monitor the project’s progress. This visit allowed them to assess the achievements already made and to define the next steps.

Environmental protection plays a significant role in the program. Reforestation and agroforestry help preserve soils, protect watersheds, and guarantee the water resources necessary for agriculture.

The Sahamaloto Dam also remains a key element. This structure irrigates 7,000 hectares of rice paddies and benefits more than 20,000 inhabitants. Environmental restoration efforts are also underway there.

The project also encourages the use of new agricultural technologies. In Andrebakely Atsimo, small solar-powered irrigation systems are being progressively installed. This equipment facilitates watering, reduces the workload for farmers, and improves yields.

Direct support to producers continues in several localities. In Sahamamy, 504 farmers received seeds, fertilizers, and agricultural equipment to increase the quantity and quality of their harvests.

Road infrastructure is also a priority. Rehabilitation work is underway on the 8-kilometer road linking Amboasary to Amboanjo. According to authorities, this road will facilitate the movement of residents and the transport of agricultural products to markets.
