Seychelles Accelerates Efforts
Issues related to waste management and marine environmental protection were the focus of a meeting held on March 17 at State House.
President Patrick Herminie received a delegation from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for a courtesy visit.
During the discussions, a regional waste management program coordinated by the IUCN and involving several island states in the Indian Ocean was discussed. This program aims to improve waste collection and treatment systems while reducing marine pollution.
The delegation, led by Luther Anukur Bois, also discussed ways to strengthen collaboration with Seychelles. The objective is to support the country’s efforts in biodiversity protection and sustainable development. Discussions highlighted concrete actions such as recycling, landfill improvements, and community awareness campaigns.
Another important point discussed concerned the management of the Mascarene Plateau, a seabed area shared between Seychelles and Mauritius. Rich in marine resources, this area requires sustainable management. Seychelles hopes to benefit from IUCN’s technical support to better protect this space.
Discussions also focused on financing environmental projects. Solutions were discussed to help island nations access funding, particularly in the context of combating the effects of climate change.
Finally, the blue economy and climate resilience were presented as priorities for the future. IUCN encouraged Seychelles to continue its commitment to international initiatives related to ocean protection.
