Port of Toamasina: security and rehabilitation as a priority

Temporary Measures to Maintain Maritime Traffic

Temporary measures have already been put in place to allow ships to enter and leave the port of Toamasina, despite the scale of the work and the significant cost of the rehabilitation.

Prime Minister Rajaonarivelo Herintsalama Andriamasy visited the site to find quick and lasting solutions to secure the infrastructure and protect the region’s economic development.

He toured the large SPAT warehouse, where equipment for disaster response is stored. The Prime Minister also inspected the maintenance areas for inspection vessels and the rice storage depots. Initial findings showed that the perimeter fence surrounding the port had approximately 700 meters of damage, making rehabilitation urgent to ensure the safety and proper functioning of the maritime terminal.

In fact, the Prime Minister monitored the progress of the port expansion project. “No damage has been reported on the ongoing works. The delivery of the 333-meter C4 canal is scheduled for the end of March 2026. This project will increase the port’s capacity and facilitate trade and maritime transport in the region,” according to the official source.

Furthermore, Rajaonarivelo Herintsalama Andriamasy emphasized the importance of combining efficiency, safety, and adherence to deadlines to ensure the smooth operation of the port area, a key driver of national trade. “These works will strengthen the resilience of the infrastructure and support local economic growth,” he reiterated.
