A Greenpeace Africa office is being established in Mauritius

A New Center to Protect Oceans and Natural Resources

Greenpeace Africa Opens an Office in Mauritius to Strengthen Regional Cooperation on the Environment and Climate.

The ceremony took place on January 14, 2026, at the Hennessy Park Hotel in Ébène, in the presence of Joanna Bérenger, Minister Delegate for the Environment, and Dr. Oulie Keita, Executive Director of Greenpeace Africa.

In her speech, the Minister praised the organization’s long-standing commitment to environmental protection in Africa and beyond. She noted that its actions keep major environmental issues at the forefront of public debate through scientific research, citizen mobilization, and advocacy. “Such initiatives deserve respect and recognition,” she stated.

According to Joanna Bérenger, the choice of Mauritius to host the office is both strategic and symbolic. As a small island nation, Mauritius is already experiencing the effects of climate change, such as coastal erosion, rising sea levels, and coral reef degradation. “This presence will strengthen the island’s role as a platform for dialogue and leadership on ocean and climate issues in the region,” she added.

Furthermore, the minister emphasized the importance of scientific and concerted responses to environmental challenges. She stressed that her ministry remains open to civil society and NGOs, and that dialogue and mutual trust are essential for finding sustainable solutions.

For his part, Dr. Oulie Keita commended Mauritius for its advanced legal framework concerning marine protection, the fight against plastic pollution, and the promotion of a sustainable blue economy. This framework highlights the importance of local communities and young activists, and indicated that Greenpeace Africa will contribute its expertise, investigative tools, and legal platforms to amplify the voices of Mauritians and encourage collaboration across the African continent.
