The Smart Cities in Africa program aims for inclusive and equitable development, encompassing affordable housing, social safety nets, and community initiatives to enhance living standards and reduce urban poverty. These projects also prioritize accessibility and universal design principles, ensuring that infrastructures and services are accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Areas of focus when creating a smart city

Smart cities focus on developing digital infrastructures to improve connectivity, mobility and accessibility. This includes, among other things, investments in :

  • Transportation systems
  • Light rail networks
  • Traffic management solutions to reduce congestion
  • Digital infrastructure development

Smart cities prioritize sustainable urban planning practices to minimize environmental impact and enhance resource efficiency. This involves implementing green building standards, energy-efficient infrastructure, and sustainable water management systems to decrease carbon emissions and bolster resilience against climate change. At least a dozen smart cities in Africa are leading the charge in this technology-driven revolution, laying their foundations on advanced technological frameworks to improve the quality of life for their residents. These pioneering cities are setting a precedent for other African urban centers to emulate.

Cape Town

Cape Town shines as one of Africa’s leading cities, offering open access to all data collected from residents through its public data portal. Additionally, free internet access is provided on city buses. The city leverages real-time data to enhance disaster risk management, police operations, and fire and rescue services.

Nairobi

Kenya is making significant strides towards establishing a smart city with the development of Silicon Savannah Konza Techno City, a technology hub modeled after Silicon Valley. Located 60 kilometers from Nairobi, this ambitious project aims to integrate smart gadgets and sensors embedded in roads and structures. When comparing country-level data on Internet penetration, only two African nations surpass the global average: Morocco, boasting a penetration rate of 84.1 %, and Egypt, close behind with a rate of 71.9 %.

The African network of smart cities

A dozen African cities are actively leveraging digital platforms to address both local and global challenges. Through collaboration and networking, these cities aspire to emerge as prominent digital leaders within their local contexts, emphasizing sustainability and responsibility.

This ambitious program is supported by AFD and overseen by the National Agency for Urban Renewal (ANRU). URBACT, a European program promoting sustainable urban development, has contributed its extensive experience working with over 1,000 cities across Europe over the past 18 years. This expertise is now being harnessed to assist a coalition of metropolises in developing countries.
