SriLankan Airlines plans direct route to Madagascar

Resumption of discussions between Madagascar and Sri Lanka after a 17-year hiatus

On May 10, 2025, the Minister of Transport and Meteorology, Valéry Ramonjavelo, received a delegation from Sri Lankan Airlines in Antananarivo, led by its President, Sarath Ganegoda.

This meeting is part of the effort to strengthen relations between Madagascar and Sri Lanka, which have been dormant since the signing of a bilateral agreement in 2008, according to the ministry’s press release.

No direct flight has yet been established between the two countries despite this agreement. However, today’s discussions revived hopes for an early implementation. “We are currently studying the possibility of opening a direct flight between Madagascar and Sri Lanka, which would encourage the arrival of tourists and economic operators from South Asia and Southeast Asia,” declared the Malagasy Minister.

Strategically positioned in Asia, this airline can act as an air hub to several major destinations on the continent, such as India, China, and ASEAN member countries. Its proximity to international hubs such as the Maldives, Dubai, and Australia also enhances its attractiveness as a transit point.

On the sidelines of the discussion on the opening of a direct route, the two parties discussed the possibilities of technical cooperation between SriLankan Airlines and Madagascar Airlines. The option of a codeshare agreement was raised as a short-term solution to improve regional connectivity, facilitate air connections, and boost economic and tourism exchanges between the Big Island and Asian markets. Feasibility studies are underway and could lead to a concrete project in the coming months.
