Mionjo Project : Reinforced support for households in southern Madagascar

Restoring the food production capacity of local communities

The second phase of the Mionjo project, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has been launched. This initiative aims to support vulnerable households in southern Madagascar.

The Mionjo project aims to reach 20,000 households in the Androy and Anosy regions, plus an additional 5,000 in the Atsimo-Andrefana region. Its primary goal is to preserve and restore the food production capacity of local communities. The FAO emphasizes the need to strengthen food systems and address environmental challenges.

A key focus is improving local farmers’ livelihoods by enhancing access to quality seeds adapted to climate change. Training seed multiplication producers (SMPs) in the targeted districts is a crucial component. These farmers will be thoroughly trained to produce high-quality seeds, helping them adapt to climatic variations and cultivate more sustainable crops.

In southern Madagascar, the Mionjo project supports farmers through a collaboration between the Ministry of Decentralization and Regional Planning, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Environment. The project is funded by the World Bank.
