Comoros in the Spotlight in Montreal
Two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were concluded by the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACM) with the civil aviation authorities of Singapore and Saudi Arabia.
The signing took place during the 42nd Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in Montreal and marks an important step in the development of Comorian aviation. The Comorian delegation, led by Director General Abdou Mondoha Abdillahi, views these agreements as a strategic means to make the Comoros a regional hub for tourism and trade.
The Ministry of Maritime and Air Transport plans to strengthen air connectivity and further integrate the country into the international network.
During the assembly, the delegation met with the ICAO Regional Director for East Africa. Discussions focused on the national greenhouse gas emissions reduction plan and follow-up on the recommendations of the 2019 audit. With a 63% implementation rate of corrective actions, the Comoros demonstrates a concrete commitment to safety, security, and environmental sustainability.
The ANACM also requested support to strengthen its technical capacities, particularly for flight crew certification and the investigation of aviation accidents and incidents. These efforts aim to modernize the aviation sector and create new economic opportunities, while consolidating the Comoros’ position on the international stage.
At the same time, ICAO organized its Innovation Fair on September 21 and 22, 2025, under the theme “Global Horizons: Inclusive Innovations for Aviation.” The event brought together states, international organizations, businesses, universities, and civil society. Panels and an exhibition area highlighted technologies and solutions applicable to aviation, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Africa played an active role during the meeting, with increased representation from the continent’s countries. The African Union Commission and the African Civil Aviation Commission presented eight countries as candidates for membership in the ICAO Council, to strengthen the continent’s voice and influence global decisions in the aviation sector.
