Kew Gardens – Madagascar: Together for Botanical Conservation

An Ambitious Project for Science and the Environment

The protection of biodiversity and the search for sustainable solutions to environmental challenges are at the heart of a partnership between Madagascar and the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.

A delegation from the British institution, led by Dr. Isabel Larridon, Head of Department, was received by Professor Loulla Chaminah, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, on March 17, 2025.

One of the main objectives of this collaboration is to study and preserve Madagascar’s endemic flora. The « Today’s Flora for Tomorrow » project embodies this ambition by training a new generation of local botanists and digitizing the collections of the Tsimbazaza Botanical and Zoological Park (PBZT). Putting this herbarium online will allow scientists around the world to access the unique resources of the Big Island.

Local universities will play a central role in the success of these initiatives, providing expertise and human resources. Their involvement is essential for developing innovative and sustainable solutions to current ecological challenges. By integrating research and conservation, this international cooperation constitutes a strategic lever for the preservation of Madagascar’s natural heritage and its scientific influence on a global scale.
