Higher education: official opening of the 2025-2026 academic year

Itasy University Hosts the Ceremony

University activities for all higher education institutions in Madagascar officially began on March 13th with the opening ceremony for the 2025-2026 academic year, held in Itasy.

The event brought together several authorities, including the President of the Refoundation of the Republic, Michael Randrianirina, accompanied by his wife, as well as academic and administrative officials.

In his speech, the President emphasized the role of universities in society. According to him, the campus should not only transmit knowledge. The institution must also train responsible citizens, capable of contributing to the nation’s economic and social development.

The Head of State also stressed the importance of adapting university programs to the realities of the country and the needs of the job market. “The goal is to prepare graduates capable of meeting the expectations of the professional world and contributing to the country’s development,” he stated.

The visit was also marked by the inauguration of new infrastructure designed to improve working conditions for teachers. Among these projects is the “Teachers’ Village.” This program includes 31 housing units for teachers, two sanitary blocks, and a water and electricity supply system for the campus.

According to officials, this infrastructure should improve the working environment and support teaching and research activities.

Founded in 2015, the University of Itasy remains a relatively new institution. Initially, it was affiliated with the University of Antananarivo before gaining its autonomy in 2019.

Today, the institution comprises five higher education institutions, including the Higher Institute of Technology (IST). The university offers several training programs tailored to the needs of the region and the country.

The number of students is expected to continue to increase in the coming years. University officials plan to reach more than 2,000 students by 2027, as part of efforts to strengthen youth access to higher education in regions of Madagascar.
