A year of success for the Comorian Geological Survey

The Office is making a fresh start

In 2010, the Geological Bureau of the Comoros (Bgc) was created to supervise the exploitation and management of natural resources, such as hydrocarbons, geothermal energy and minerals.

On September 29, the institution celebrated the first year of management of Nakib Ali Mhoumadi, who has recovered its finances and modernized its activities.

The ceremony took place on the premises of the Bgc and brought together Ousseine Abdoulfatah, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Hydrocarbons, the managers of the office and about sixty agents.

During his speech, Soulé Mady M’DAHOMA, SG of the organization recalled the strategic role of the office in the supervision of the country’s natural resources.

When he arrived, the Director found an almost empty budget and a debt of more than 31 million Comorian francs (74,000 USD). “In the space of twelve months, 95% of this debt has been repaid and salaries are now regularly paid on the 25th of each month,” explained the SG.

Under his leadership, the Bgc obtained USD 26 million from the African Development Bank for the Karthala geothermal project. The public subsidy has increased, while a mutual health insurance and a pension plan have covered all the staff. The laboratory is now fully functioning, the headquarters has received renovations and the internet connection has allowed more efficient work.

For the future, the Bgc plans to strengthen staff training, finalize the national mapping and acquire a drilling truck to facilitate access to drinking water. The revival of the oil sector is progressing thanks to a project under discussion with the Norwegian company Tgs. Regional branches and the ArGeo conference in 2026 are also among the priorities.
