UoM : Strengthening youth engagement in a professional environment

Supporting youth facilitators in their mission

On Monday, May 27, 2024, the University of Mauritius (UoM), in partnership with the Commonwealth, launched a youth work training program aimed at increasing youth involvement in multisectoral initiatives.

Youth facilitators and officers from the National Youth Council (NYC) and the Mauritius Recreation Council (MRC) are eligible to participate in this training. Both organizations operate under the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports, and Recreation. The initiative seeks to strengthen the accountability of youth facilitators while supporting development initiatives.

The program’s objective is to enhance youth facilitators’ understanding in an international context and improve their ability to foster youth development. It also targets members of the Regional Youth Council and leaders of the Youth Commission. With 91 candidates enrolled, the program spans 10 to 12 weeks and is divided into two modules: youth accompaniment and youth and sustainable development.

Introducing youth work training in Mauritius is crucial to the nation’s social development, especially given the growing need for facilitators due to social changes. The event was attended by Minister Stephan Toussaint, UoM Vice-Chancellor Professor Sanjeev Sobhee, and UoM Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Issack Santaly.
