Madagascar : Celebration of Wetland Protection

Day of awareness for environmental preservation

Wetlands play a key role in environmental balance and water supply. World Wetlands Day 2025 highlights the urgency of their preservation.

World Wetlands Day, celebrated every February 2nd, was held this year at Lake Mandroseza. The chosen theme, “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future,” underscores their essential role.

These ecosystems provide freshwater, support agriculture, and mitigate climate change. Their degradation is accelerating, threatening biodiversity and access to potable water. In Madagascar, their preservation has become an urgent need.

The Ministry of the Environment emphasizes that the choice of Lake Mandroseza illustrates the connection between the Ikopa River and the water supply for Antananarivo. The event brought together several stakeholders, with speeches highlighting the importance of these environments. A visit to the JIRAMA production station raised awareness about resource management, and the cleanup of the Ikopa River banks marked local engagement.

Similar events took place across the country. Authorities, associations, and the private sector are mobilizing, but concrete actions are necessary. In the face of environmental challenges, protecting these areas is urgent to ensure a sustainable future.
